In Shanghai, the US electric car maker started production of its “Model Y” for export to Canada earlier this month, the insider told Reuters news agency. The vehicles designed for Canada should be sold later this year. Almost 9,000 such cars are to be manufactured in the current quarter, according to the production log viewed by Reuters. The move connects Tesla’s largest factory to its largest market for the first time. So far, there has been no comment from the carmaker.
At the weekend, the Elon Musk Group announced that it wants to offer a new and cheaper version of the “Model Y” in Canada. The car can travel 245 miles (394 kilometers) on a full charge. The US version of the model gets 279 miles at the entry-level price. Both the new version and the standard model already offered in Canada met subsidy conditions, the Ministry of Transport announced on Friday. Interested parties can therefore count on grants of 5,000 Canadian dollars (equivalent to 3362 euros) for a purchase or a four-year leasing contract.
Tesla shares were temporarily down 0.99 percent at $ 163.44 in NASDAQ trading on Monday.
