After leaving Everton

Marcel Brands returns to PSV Eindhoven after four years. The 59-year-old, who had to vacate his position as manager at ailing Everton last December, will become managing director of the Eredivisie club for the coming season. Brands, who was sporting director at PSV from 2010 to 2018, has been given a contract until June 30, 2027.

“Marcel is a true clubman, knows the laws of international football inside out and is ready to take PSV by the hand in a new role. The future of PSV is in the right hands with him,” said the chairman of the supervisory board, Robert van der Wallen. Brands succeeds Toon Gerbrands, who is stepping down after eight seasons despite a contract until 2025.

“Marcel is currently available to take on a leadership role at PSV. I see this as a great opportunity for the club and I firmly believe that this will bring a lot to PSV. I worked closely with him for nine years at AZ and PSV. With Marcel, PSV gets a top man. Someone with special qualities, expertise and experience. With a number of decisions coming up that will be important for PSV’s course in the coming years, this is the best time to take a new step,” explained Gerbrands. Brands has to find a successor for outgoing coach Roger Schmidt.
