Ding Liren has to play to win
For the Chinese grandmaster, the deficit means that he has to play for a win with the white pieces, especially in his remaining three games. It is all the more problematic that his supposed opening repertoire was revealed on Thursday, or that two accounts were identified on an online platform that played against each other in the run-up to the 2023 World Cup and had ideas such as the 4th h3 in the rejected Queen’s Gambit (game two) or practiced the combination of e3, a3 and Ra2 in the Nimzo-Indian Defense (game eight). Many well-prepared moments of surprise should be a thing of the past.

Last two draws in a row
After no less than five of the first seven games of the 2023 World Chess Championship ended in a decision, there were two draws in a row, with Ding Liren missing several chances to win on Thursday, before Jan Nepomnjaschtschi on Friday in the longest match of this year so far World Championship could not knead a wafer-thin advantage into a winning position despite long efforts. This left the Russian one point ahead.

Nepomnyashchi are still 2.5 points short
Jan Nepomnyashchi leads 5.0 to 4.0 after nine games played and needs 2.5 points from the remaining five games to become the 17th world champion in the history of classical chess. In other words: If the last five games are all drawn, Nepo is through.
