In 2007, the Bundestag decided to erect a unity monument. Four years later, the 50-meter-long “unit seesaw” was chosen as the winning design in a tender.

After all sorts of quarrels, construction began in May 2020. Officially, completion is expected this year, costs: 17 million euros. It could have been much faster and cheaper.

Karola and Günter created a pocket-sized unity monument more than 30 years ago. Cost: 8 euros. That’s how much I paid for it at the junk dealer.

These are the remains of walls lovingly framed in cement, draped on a wooden panel. “As wallpeckers, we helped to dismantle the Berlin Wall!!!” it says. In addition, the names of Günter and Karola and the date December 28, 1989 in typescript.

This is a unit monument to my taste! Günter and Karola, wherever you are, thank you for this little treasure. Your little work of art took my Berlin heart by storm.
