Asylum seekers in Ter Apel may have to sleep outside again

Due to the high influx of asylum seekers, it cannot be ruled out that people in Ter Apel will have to sleep outside again, says Prime Minister Mark Rutte. “It’s impossible to guarantee it won’t happen.”

Last year, the cabinet was criticized for the situation at the application center in Ter Apel. Aid organizations such as the Red Cross and Doctors without Borders came to the aid of asylum seekers. Eric van der Burg, State Secretary for Asylum and Migration, then wanted to prevent asylum seekers from having to stay in the open air. But with the current influx of asylum seekers, it cannot be ruled out that this will happen again.

The cabinet has been talking about migration for some time, but according to Rutte it is “always a long-term issue” and “extremely complex and international”. The prime minister thinks it is obvious that additional measures will be added to the agreements in the coalition agreement.
