‘She feels very important’

Viola Holt has not forgotten that Angela de Jong called her a ‘sad superwappie’ last year. The former TV star is now striking back hard. “She feels very important.”

In the eyes of the general public, a select group of celebrities has somewhat gone off the rails during the corona pandemic. For example, Viola Holt suddenly appeared on the stage of Forum for Democracy during an anti-corona protest in Amsterdam and she also made scattering video content with Virus Truth leader Willem Engel.

Opperwappie

Angela de Jong has lost all respect for Viola as a result. She called her an opperwappie last year. “It really doesn’t get sadder than Viola Holt on a stage at the Forum of Democracy in showbizland.”

More than a year later, Viola returns to this during an extensive interview with the Weekend. “I don’t read Algemeen Dagblad, but I was a columnist for AD for a few years in the eighties. Angela de Jong was probably not yet born at that time or was in the cradle.”

‘it lift her up’

Viola begins her insult to Angela with a compliment. “She is an intelligent woman and writes columns that always cause a lot of controversy. It’s just that when I was a columnist, you weren’t invited to TV shows.”

That does happen with Angela. “Do you know: it lift her up. It makes Angela de Jong more important than she is. I’ve always hated that, people who start to feel more important. That is the world today.”

No expertise

There is not enough expertise, says Viola. “There is no longer a Theo van Gogh. Jeroen Pauw no longer does interviews. Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is no longer there. Then you get that things like this (Angela de Jong’s column, ed.) suddenly start playing a role in the media and society. Well, I’m not reading it. I do not care.”

She concludes: “Whatever she says about me, I don’t care. People who know me know better. This is just scoring. Nowadays that is the case with everything, including #MeToo and so on. It’s about scoring. Television is actually a bit desperate at the moment.”
