New peace bridge ‘Peace Bridge’ in Ypres
The old bridge made the connection to the mainland since 1951. But that had to be demolished in February to make way for a new bridge. The owner of the brasserie on the Eilandje largely pays for the new bridge himself. The price has doubled to 300,000 euros due to the crisis.
The new bridge is a bridge of words, a permanent monument with 86 translations of the word peace. They are all languages that were spoken here in the First World War.
