The Holtinger sheep herd in Havelte received a maternity visit from a few thousand people today, mainly parents with children. For this occasion, children were allowed to feed the sheep with biks.
The parents and their children had to stay behind the fence when feeding. Walking between the sheep and lambs in the sheepfold and on the field was not possible.
Volunteer Jelmer Cleveringa of the Holtinger sheep herd about this: “That used to be possible, but we no longer do that because of animal welfare and because of the health of people and animals.”
It should not spoil the fun for the children. 9-year-old Lisanne pulls a bit of a dirty face when a sheep eats the kibble from her hand. “That felt a bit strange. At first I thought it was a bit scary, but not anymore.”
