Official: Chelsea bring back Frank Lampard – 3rd manager of the season

Second most valuable squad in the world

Frank Lampard is back in charge of Chelsea FC, the Londoners officially announced that. The club legend is being brought back after a good two years by owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali – the men who fired Lampard’s successor Thomas Tuchel just last September and did the same to Graham Potter on April 2nd.

Unlike Potter’s signing, Lampard is not due a fee as he has been without a club since leaving Everton in January 2023. The former world-class midfielder has been given a contract as interim coach that runs until the end of the season. Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique are considered hot candidates for the next season.

Second most valuable squad in the world – Chelsea disappoint despite record spending

When Lampard was forced to vacate his post in early 2021, Chelsea were 10th – now 11th after the biggest transfer spend in football history. It is now up to the 44-year-old to save the American investor’s project, for which around 650 million euros were invested, including coach transfers and severance payments, in the first season. Upcoming tasks for Lampard and the second most valuable squad in the world are Wolverhampton, Brighton and Man United in the league and Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.

In 2020/21, Lampard got signings for €247m, including Timo Werner, who is back for RB Leipzig, and Hakim Ziyech, who was just a follower recently. Tuchel took over the team and led it to the title in the “premier class”. A repeat of that feat is Chelsea’s only hope of qualifying again for Europe’s biggest competition.
