DFB team against defending champions France: U17 European Championship groups drawn

FIFA withdraws the World Cup from Peru

The German U17s will face defending champions France, Portugal and Scotland in group C of the preliminary round at the European Championships. That was the result of the draw on Monday in Budapest. The tournament will take place in Hungary from May 17th to June 2nd. In the crucial qualifying round for the European Championship in March, Germany qualified for the tournament as group runners-up behind Spain.

The German U17s were last defeated in the 2022 tournament in the quarterfinals on penalties by eventual European champions France. The young Germans won the last title in this age group in 2009 with Mario Götze and Marc-André ter Stegen in a team (to the final match report).

“We have already played against many teams that have qualified for the European Championship and measured ourselves on an equal footing with them,” said selection coach Christian Wück. “So we don’t have to hide from any team and therefore expect chances.”

The groups of the U17 European Championship 2023 at a glance:

Group A: Hungary (hosts), Ireland, Poland, Wales

Group B: Serbia, Spain, Italy, Slovenia

Group C: Portugal, France (holders), Scotland, Germany

Group D: Croatia, Netherlands, Switzerland, England

FIFA again withdraws hosts from a World Cup: U17 tournament not in Peru

Meanwhile, the World Football Association has once again withdrawn a World Cup from an organizer. Just five days after the end of the U20 World Cup in Indonesia, FIFA announced on Monday that Peru will not host the U17 World Cup scheduled for November 10th to December 2nd. FIFA justified the move by saying Peru was unable to meet its commitments to complete the infrastructure needed to host the tournament. FIFA wants to stick to the date of the U17 World Cup and is now looking for a new host.

Only last week, FIFA Indonesia accepted the U20 World Cup and justified this with a reaction to current circumstances. The association left open whether a critical attitude in Indonesia towards World Cup participants Israel played a role in the decision. The group draw planned for Bali had previously been cancelled. There is said to have been political resistance to Israel’s participation.

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority country and has no diplomatic relations with Israel. FIFA wants to stick to the date of this tournament, which is planned for May 20th to June 11th with 24 teams, and is looking for a new organizer.
