Next farewell in biathlon! Mari Eder has announced the end of her career. This continues the wave of resignations.
After record world champion Marte Olsbu Røiseland, DSV superstar Denise Herrmann-Wick, the French Anaïs Chevalier-Bouchet and Tiril Eckhoff from Norway, Mari Eder is also breaking up in biathlon. The Finn announced her decision on social media on Sunday.
“I grew up at home with a great deal of honesty and responsibility and the instruction to help others whenever possible. I feel like I’ve managed to live up to these values in the demanding environment of elite sport and in my to live your own difficult times,” wrote the 35-year-old in her emotional statement.
Eder finished the overall Biathlon World Cup 2022/23 in 22nd place with 305 points – the best result of her career. The end of the athlete’s career had already been in the air last fall.
The Finn, who has been married to former Austrian biathlete Benjamin Eder since 2018, has repeatedly been slowed down by serious illnesses.
Fourth place at the 2017 Biathlon World Championships
Eder celebrated her greatest World Cup successes in the 2016/17 season in Oslo, when she won both the sprint and the pursuit in the Norwegian winter sports stronghold. At the 2017 Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen, she narrowly missed out on the individual podium in fourth place.
“Like every top athlete, I dreamed of winning a personal medal,” wrote Eder. “In the end, I have to admit that my skill, hard work or talent wasn’t enough. Although I was close with my 4th place at the World Championships, the truth was that I was far too far too many times,” said the Finn .
