On January 12, 2023, Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley and his wife Priscilla, died of cardiac arrest at the age of just 54. She is survived by her eldest daughter, Riley Keough, as well as her two 14-year-old twin daughters, Harper and Finley. It has now been announced that Lisa Marie’s ex-husband Michael Lockwood, with whom the singer was in a relationship between 2006 and 2016, is said to have received full custody of their daughters.
Court official Gus Morales confirmed the verdict, according to a report by the Daily Mail. In California, if one parent dies, custody automatically passes to the other parent unless the court finds that person unfit. According to a report by Entertainment Tonight, full custody could only go to Lockwood as long as no other family member objects. However, since the grandmother of the twins Priscilla Presley did not object, the verdict was passed – although Michael Lockwood is said not to have even appeared at the court hearing.
A custody battle had been going on for several years prior to Lisa Marie Presley’s death. But shortly after the tragic death, Presley’s attorney attended a virtual hearing and called for the custody case to be dropped because his client “is no longer with us.” The fact that Priscilla Presley accepted the court decision is said to have particularly upset Riley Keough – the 33-year-old half-sister of the twins. A heated will dispute has erupted between Keough and her grandmother since Lisa Marie’s death.
