DFB hopes for greater political commitment

The German Football Association (DFB) is hoping for a stronger commitment from politicians with a view to the home European Championship in 2024.

“I would also like that financially,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf: “It’s a great opportunity to show the country beyond football. We expect 2.5 to three million people in the stadiums to watch the games broadcast worldwide.”

According to the association, the federal government has so far pledged almost 20 million euros in support. Neuendorf expects a larger sum: “I would also like to speak to the cabinet to make all ministers aware of the importance of the tournament.”

Neuendorf hopes that there will be international matches with earlier kick-off times as a promotional measure for the finals in the run-up to the European Championship. “We do believe that we can occasionally manage to show one or two games earlier,” said the DFB boss: “I wrote that in the specifications. But it’s also a matter of finances. It’s about extremely high Buzz.”
