A 43-year-old man from Hoogeveen was sentenced to 14 months in prison for attempted manslaughter of a 31-year-old neighbour, of which 8 months were suspended. During a fight, he knocked down his rival from one high.
In the early morning of November 22, the 31-year-old knocked on the door of the forty-year-old who lives in the same flat on Bilderdijklaan. The man wanted to talk about noise nuisance, the night before. Armed with a knife, he called the man outside and broke a window in the process. A fight broke out in the gallery over this.
The knife fell to the ground and was later recovered by officers. The knife came from the thirties’ home. The judge finds it acceptable that the oldest local resident initially defended himself against the attack. But then the man went too far. He pressed the younger man against the railing, bent down and lifted the other up by his legs.
The thirties fell with his head forward. This could have been fatal, the judge said. Fortunately, the man fell on the lawn and not on the sidewalk. Local residents who had come to the screams saw all this happen. They also heard the man who threw shout after the fallen man: “Next time I will throw you from a higher floor”.
Very serious and this must have caused feelings of unrest in the neighborhood, the judge said. The sentence was lower than the previously demanded two years in prison, half of which was conditional. The judge took into account the role of the victim. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison for destroying the window, threatening and assaulting him, of which 17 days were suspended.
