Shortly before the top game against RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund had to cope with bad news: The in-form BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had to pass at short notice due to a muscle injury.
On the RB Leipzig side, on the other hand, Christopher Nkunku returned to the starting XI after 111 days. The French national player had recently been substituted on twice after recovering from a torn ligament. Former BVB coach Marco Rose initially put Timo Werner on the bench when he returned to Dortmund.
Rose’s counterpart Edin Terzic only wanted to make two changes: right-back Ryerson and Salih Özcan replaced Raphael Guerreiro and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
But then goalkeeper Kobel fell out for a short time due to muscular problems, Alexander Meyer replaced him in goal for BVB. It was not initially known whether Kobel was missing from Borussia for a long time.
Kobel had already missed several BVB games in the first half of the season due to a torn muscle fiber and was mostly well represented by Meyer at the time.
BVB: Strong performances by Gregor Kobel
The 25-year-old Swiss is one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season. He kept his box clean eight times in 19 games in the upper house.
There are also two clean sheets in four Champions League appearances and two of three DFB Cup games.
Recently, given his strong performance, there have been rumors of a change about Kobel: FC Bayern should watch the BVB keeper as well as the Premier League heavyweights FC Chelsea and Manchester United.
“I’m already playing for a club with which I can win titles. I have a lot planned for BVB and we’re on the right track with our work. We have a huge chance of winning something this season,” he reacted Kobel himself recently told “Sport Bild” about the speculation.
