3rd league: Dortmund cannot stop Freiburg II either

SC Freiburg II continued to build on their streak and also won against Borussia Dortmund II. However, the result was much tighter than the course of the game.

Yannik Engelhardt let Freiburg II cheer. With his goal to make it 1-0, the 22-year-old shot the Freiburg U23s to victory against Borussia Dortmund II (66th minute). After the fifth win in a row, coach Thomas Stamm’s team is now in second place in the 3rd division with 51 points and has a seven-point lead over the relegation place before Saturday’s games.

The win could have been even bigger. Although Dortmund had the first chance of the game, returnee Noah Atubolu was able to deflect the shot from Marko Pasalic (20th). After that, Freiburg’s top scorer Vincent Vermeij provided a goal threat. In the 24th minute, however, he was unable to beat Dortmund keeper Marcel Lotka with his header. His margin went to the side netting.

Engelhardt shoots Freiburg II to victory

Even after the break, Freiburg was the better team. First, Lars Kehl hit the side netting again (53′). Twelve minutes later, BVB defender Pharell Nnamdi Collins accidentally headed the ball onto his own crossbar (65′). Then Vermej showed overview: The 28-year-old Dutchman – even in a promising position – put the ball after a cross from Philipp Treu to the even better positioned Engelhardt, who shot in for Freiburg’s deserved lead (66th). Because substitute Julian Stark failed in the final phase first because of Lotka and then because of the lack of precision, the deserved 1-0 victory remained.

Freiburg II is only six points behind the surprise team from SV Elversberg (57 points) and even eleven points ahead of fourth place. In this form, the people of Breisgau actually only have one problem: As a second team, Vermej and Co cannot be promoted.
