The tax, unofficially referred to as the “Amazon Tax”, is intended to prevent heavy delivery vans from burdening the city’s infrastructure for packages weighing a few hundred grams. Parcel carriers often park incorrectly or in the second row due to time pressure, thereby blocking traffic. Non-electric delivery vans in particular also cause direct air and noise pollution in cities.
