It must have been a mini edition that rolled off Nigeria’s counters in 1982. Actually surprising, because one of the top producers of the time was behind the debut album of the Good Samaritans, Brother Angel philosopher Okundaye composed numerous hits in the eighties. He acted here as a multi-instrumentalist and hired some top people from the Benin City region for the recordings at Phonodisk Studio of Ijebu-Igbo.

Compared to the largely highlife-oriented tracks on the analog Africa compilation EDO FUNK EXPLOSION Vol. 1 (2021), this is a really cutting sound, Okundaye kicking the disco and funk grooves into orbit with his dancefloor booties . You might call it psychedelic disco, tracks like “Ughamwen-Rhienenemwen” and “Onughara” groove on a similar wavelength to the Talking Heads hits of those years, such as REMAIN IN LIGHT.
It’s no secret that David Byrne was heavily influenced by West African music, but accusations of whitewashing followed when the Talking Heads were pointed out about their dealings with Afrofunk. Okundaye was one of the dazzling figures of the funk scene in Nigeria, he produced another three Samaritans albums. Only Analog Africa boss Samy Ben Redjeb can answer whether they will ever be released and take us a little further into the depths of Edo Funk. NO FOOD WITHOUT TASTE IF BY HUNGER now plays the tracks that were still missing for dancefoor bliss – made audible for a larger audience – to eighties funk.
