Borrowed from FSV until the end of the season
At least since the departure of Rafael Czichos, Luca Kilian has been a part of the central defense of 1. FC Köln. In eight of the last ten Bundesliga games, coach Steffen Baumgart called him into the starting eleven, and for the first time in two years, back then at SC Paderborn, the 22-year-old can call himself a regular player again. However, it is unclear how long Kilian will continue to wear the jersey of “Effzeh”. As of now, the former U21 national player is returning to regular club Mainz 05 in the summer – but according to his own statements he does not want that at all.
“Of course I would like to stay here at FC. And not back to Mainz, I can already say that much,” Kilian made clear in the “Geißbockecho”. He had hardly played a role at FSV since moving from Paderborn in the summer of 2020 and in the meantime even had to play in the regional league. After a little over a year, there were just eight competitive appearances.
“The time in Mainz was an instructive chapter that I don’t have to open again,” emphasizes Kilian now, although he still has a contract until 2024 with tenth in the table. According to reports, the right foot can be firmly committed by the Cologne team for a sum of 2 million euros. “Even if staying here doesn’t work out, I’ll probably look elsewhere,” Kilian clarifies – for him it would be the fourth summer in a row with a new club (on transfer history).
