Ademola Lookman (24) will play for the Nigerian national team instead of England. FIFA on Thursday approved a change of association for the Leicester City winger.
Lookman, who is on loan to the Premier League club from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, played for the “Three Lions” from U19 to U21 and scored three goals at the 2017 U20 World Cup en route to the title in South Korea.
Tunde Adelakun, chief scout of the Nigerian association NFF, had already confirmed the plan to change associations last November (quoted via “The Athletic”): “We are aware of Lookman’s desire to play for us and I spoke to him as well. However, it will be a long process. After this process, the head coach (since this week José Peseiro; ed.) considers and decides whether or when he thinks it is appropriate to involve him.” With a market value of 9 million euros, Lookman is now one of the 15 most valuable professionals in Nigeria.
