Preward the commitment and research of women who deal with hair health. For this he was banned Henkel’s Martha Schwarzkopf Awardwhich has reached its second edition this year, an initiative for reduce the gender gap in scientific research. The award was established in 2022 in honor of Martha Schwarzkopf one of the first entrepreneurs in Germany and founder of theSchwarzkopf Institute for Health Research. In the first edition it was won by an Italian researcher, Marta Bertolini, expert of the hair follicle immune system and of diseases such as alopecia areata.

In 2023 there are two prizes

Dr. Bertolini is currently Chief Scientific Officer and Deputy General Manager of the Monasterium Laboratory in Münster, Germany.

«We were surprised by the level of interest and the quality of the nominations for the first Martha Schwarzkopf Award. The experience more than positive prompted us to add an award this year for the best emerging talentso as to reward as well as established researchers, both the young promises early in their careers,” he said Andrea SattlerR&D Director of Henkel Consumer Brands and jury president of the Martha Schwarzkopf Award.

Who can apply

Female researchers with a background in natural sciences, medicine or information technologyactive in the field of hair care and health or in related areas. The best one will be rewarded with a contribution equal to 10,000 euros, to which is added an acknowledgment from 5,000 euros for the best emerging talent.

The Martha Schwarzkopf Award is open to women from any country in the world in possession of a doctorate and a solid experience in natural sciences, medicine or information technology, active in trichological research or in related fields such as research on fabrics and textile fibers, the analysis of biological fabrics or the interaction of specific substances with hair or the scalp. Female researchers with a master’s degree in the same fields, at the beginning of their scientific career, they can present themselves as “Emerging Talent”.

The judging commission

The applications will be examined by an expert jurymade up of female researchers from Henkel Consumer Brands. The awards ceremony will be in Hamburg, Germany in November 2023. The winners will also have the opportunity to participate to a mentoring program with a Henkel scientist and will enter the network that includes the winners of the past edition.

there summary of their projects, already publishedin the field of hair and scalp research, not only on hair health, fibers and related technologies, computer-based models for the study of fibers, including scientific methods for the analysis of fabrics and fibers, the synthesis of dyes o the analysis of biological processes related to hair roots (all research approaches are allowed)

When it will be known who won

The jury will select the winners by August 1, 2023. Elements such as the importance of the work carried out for trichological research, the relevance for people and the environment will be decisive in the evaluation. Pioneering spirit, originality, innovative potential, the applicability of research projects and the impact in the sector of hair health care.
