This week José María Gil-Robles y Gil-Delgado, born in 1935, died. A Christian Democrat against Franco, he later joined the PP. He was MEP and President of the European Parliament and he did more politics in Brussels than in Madrid. And neither Aznar nor Rajoy counted on him for anything else. The news reminded me of the political figure of his father José María Gil-Robles Quiñones (1898-1980) who was the most relevant right-wing politician of the Second Republic and whose failure was linked to that of the republican regime.
