Tony Marshall is dead. The pop singer died on Thursday evening at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. A spokeswoman said on Friday afternoon. The pop singer became a star in 1971 with the song “Schöne Maid”.

In the 1960s he trained as an opera singer and wanted to become known as a chanson interpreter. His breakthrough came with “Schöne Maid”, although he originally didn’t want to sing the song. Before recording, he got slightly drunk in hopes of getting kicked out of the studio by producer Jack White. The title earned him the nickname “The Nation’s Cheermaker”.

In recent years, the musician has suffered from health problems – he lived with a nervous disease that restricted his movements and had a pacemaker. He kept coming back to the hospital and needed surgery. Planned performances have therefore been cancelled. Despite all the difficulties, his last album “The Last Dream” was released in 2021.
