Baby and 88-year-old woman pulled alive from rubble in Turkey | Abroad

Nearly a week after the earthquakes, people are still being pulled alive from the rubble. Yesterday evening, an elderly woman and a baby were rescued in the Turkish regions of Kirikhan and Hatay.

German rescuers pulled an 88-year-old woman alive from under the rubble on Saturday night. The woman was hospitalized with fractures. The rescuers had suspended their activities on Saturday due to possible unrest in the region. They remain in their base in Kirikhan, and if called in for rescue activities, they go out.

Such was the case for the rescue of the 88-year-old woman. Turkish aid workers asked their German colleagues for assistance, who then accompanied them to the scene.

Baby

In another stricken city, Turkish rescuers rescued a seven-month-old baby alive from under the rubble. Turkish media report this on Sunday. Rescue workers found the child in a collapsed building in Hatay province. They heard the baby crying. A 35-year-old man was also found alive under the rubble in the same region.

More than 28,000 people were officially killed in the strong earthquake. Yet this could only be a small fraction of the actual number of casualties. “There may still be 100,000 to 200,000 people under the rubble,” VTM News reporter Julie Colpaert was told by Turkish insiders.
