TALL THE BEAUTY AND THE PAIN
(original title All the Beauty and the Bloodshed)
Type: documentary ✦✦✦
Director: Laura Poitras. With Nan Goldin, Alfonse D’Amato, Ed Koch, John Mearsheimer
At a time in the history of cinema and social relations in which women’s reasons are embodied above all by female warriors and avengers, the winner of the Golden Lion, now nominated for an Oscar, turns her lens to the battle of an artist whose fragility she shows (Nan Goldin’s family history, addiction) and strength (the fight against the Sackler family, owner of Purdue Pharma, producer of Oxycontin).
Goldin, a victim like thousands of Americans of the “opioid crisis”, makes his protest an incredible political and artistic gesture. True dissident, like Edward Snowden, the protagonist of citizenfour (2014) and as Riyadh al-Adhadh, the Iraqi doctor who starred in Poitras’ first film, My Country, My Country (2006).
