Review: The Rolling Stones :: Grrr Live!

The Stones performed at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on December 15, 2012 as part of their “50 & Counting” tour. At that time broadcast as a pay-per-view event, the concert is now being published for the first time on various video and audio media. Starting with a rather sluggish version of “Get Off Of My Cloud”, performed by the 70-year-old, of course, it no longer has the bone-crushing power that they used on the 1966 document GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT! attacked, the veterans take us through half a gross century of rock ‘n’ roll history.

The focus is of course on his first decade, which is unparalleled and can only be found in the Beatles. With a few exceptions like the rarities “Dead Flowers” and “Before They Make Me Run”, the Stones bring us their greatest hits here. The many guest appearances – The Black Keys on the Bo Diddley cover “Who Do You Love”, Homeboy Bruce Springsteen on “Tumbling Dice” and John Mayer on “I’m Going Down” – are nice touches, but actually dispensable. Big exception: Lady Gaga’s exceptional voice on “Gimme Shelter”.

The “Midnight Rambler” is even joined by fan favorite and ex-Stone Mick Taylor. When the last seconds of the usual XL version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” fade away as the closing number, the comforting feeling of a happy ending after a nerve-wracking thriller overcomes you. A straight line, which was then none. Can’t believe the band has gone on five more tours since then.
