The former Dortmund Bundesliga professional Alexander Frei is no longer the coach of FC Basel. As the Swiss football club announced, it has ended the collaboration with immediate effect.
Basel had only celebrated five wins in 19 league games under the 43-year-old Frei and slipped to seventh place after the 1-0 loss to Grasshopper Zurich last weekend.
“With a three-point lead over the last place in the table, with the teams behind FCB on the upswing at the same time, the club’s management in the current constellation lacks the perspective and the belief in a timely improvement,” said the club.
Sports director Heiko Vogel will look after the team as interim coach. Under the German coach, Basel won both the Swiss championship and the cup in 2012. The 47-year-old explained that one had to think about FC Basel and its development and therefore there was no way around taking action and giving the team new impetus.
