Oberliga Süd 50/51 & 51/52: 1. FC Nürnberg & VfB Stuttgart win titles

New in the database

The transfer market database has been enriched by further milestones. The 1950/51 and 1951/52 seasons of the Oberliga Süd can now be viewed in full. 1. FC Nürnberg became champions in the first season in a heart-stopping final on the last matchday. Because after 33 rounds, SpVgg Greuther Fürth was still level on points, but with the better goal difference, in first place. However, the “Kleeblatt” lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich, who in turn finished ninth at the end, while FCN won their home game 4-0 against BC Augsburg, now FC Augsburg.

Both teams qualified for the subsequent final round for the German championship, but Fürth didn’t seem to have recovered from the last-minute shock and finished last in its group. But the luck that he had in the league was not repeated at the “Club”. Preußen Münster prevailed due to the better goal difference and made it into the final, where they lost to 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Oberliga Süd: VfB Stuttgart 1951/52 just ahead of 1. FC Nuremberg

A year later, VfB Stuttgart secured the title in the Oberliga Süd and it was close again this time. In the end, the Swabians had a one-point lead over 1. FC Nürnberg, who lost out this time. VfB were also able to celebrate in the final round, after beating 1. FC Saarbrücken 3-2 in the final they also became German champions.

Nuremberg’s club legend Max Morlock was top scorer in both Oberliga seasons, but once he had to share the title. While he scored 28 goals in 1950/51, a year later it was 26 goals, which Helmut Klassendörfer of Kickers Offenbach also scored.
