Floods like those of 1953 are still possible
A lot of work has already been done to protect our coast, but the risk of flooding remains, especially in the ports.
Storm walls
Last year, almost one and a half million cubic meters of sand was sprayed on our beaches. More than 10,000 square meters of marram grass have been planted. And storm walls have been built on the dikes. But all this does not stop the water in a heavy storm in combination with a spring tide. Steve Timmermans: Agency for Maritime and Coastal Services: “I think that today we have already worked quite a bit on safety against flooding from the sea. But that a similar storm would still cause flooding of the polder landscape and of the various ports on the coast.”
Since 2011, there has been the Master Plan for Coastal Safety. A whole series of measures must protect our coast against a storm that can occur once every 1,000 years. The plan also takes into account the rise in sea level.
