Rasha Nahas has put almost three thousand kilometers between herself and her origins and yet she won’t let go. The Palestinian with an Israeli passport has been living in Berlin for years, but the background against which her second album AMRAT first opens up is the so-called Middle East conflict.

Not only in “Wrood” does she sing about a country that she doesn’t want and that tries to erase her name and her existence. She meticulously explores the emotional collateral damage of a seemingly hopeless political constellation. But even if Nahas takes a stand, you shouldn’t imagine it as a combative agit prop, but as a poetic examination of the inner consequences of the external circumstances.

I put my feet in the west, my heart stays in the east, she sings in “Khotwi”. The soul flows as a river, the world swims in the clouds, freedom means distance and comes at a price – as lavish as the metaphors are, as sparse the sound. For the first time Nahas writes and sings in her native Arabic, but in return she has reduced the exuberant, at times almost musical rock sound of her debut to acoustic guitars, the occasional cello, a few keys and sometimes just breathy melodies. A quiet singer/songwriter intimacy that makes the inner turmoil all the more impressive.
