The Copa America will be held for the second time in the USA with teams from all over America.
As the North and Central American continental association CONCACAF announced on Friday, ten teams from South America and six from North and Central America and the Caribbean will take part in 2024, as in the 2016 anniversary edition. The tournament is organized by CONCACAF together with the South American association CONMEBOL.
Originally, the Copa America was planned in Ecuador next year – as a South American championship as before. But the intended organizer got out. The background is also that the USA, Canada and Mexico, which are already qualified as hosts for the 2026 World Cup, can play other top-class competitive games in the run-up to the World Cup.
The two American continental associations also want to work more closely together in women’s football in the future. Brazil, Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay are also set to play in the USA in the 2024 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
