Trainer Alfred Schreuder fired at Ajax

Ajax has suspended trainer Alfred Schreuder. That happened tonight after the match against FC Volendam (1-1). The reason is the bad results. Ajax has not won the last seven league matches and is fifth in the Eredivisie.

The club management announced the decision half an hour after the disappointing game against Volendam. Assistant Matthias Kaltenbach also has to leave. Assistants Michael Reiziger and Richard Witschge will lead training tomorrow.

Schreuder was appointed more than six months ago as successor to Erik ten Hag, who left for Manchester United. His contract ran until the summer of 2024.

“We also evaluated after three games in November. A number of adjustments resulted from that. We thought we would experience a different restart after the World Cup,” said general manager Edwin van der Sar at the press conference around midnight. “The last straw has been this match. It’s about the game shown. It’s a very painful decision to make, but it’s necessary for Ajax.”

It is not yet known who will succeed Schreuder. Ajax will play against Excelsior on Sunday. Van der Sar: “There is a chance that there will be a new trainer on Sunday, but I cannot promise anything.” Van der Sar did not want to comment on the names of possible candidates, including former trainer Peter Bosz.

Van der Sar said that others will make a decision about his own staying on.
