In his inaugural speech in parliament, the new Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emphasized that he does not seek revenge, but wants to rule for all Brazilians, even those who did not vote for him. That was almost half of the electorate according to the official results. The country is politically polarized and the presidential sash was not put on by his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, on Sunday. Normally, the outgoing president does that for the new one. But Bolsonaro fled to Florida on Friday and has never acknowledged defeat in October’s election.
