To avoid naming confusion, this isn’t an offshoot of the 4AD label’s collective work surnamed This Mortal Coil, but rather a tribute project to English avant-garde electronica artists Coil, who released influential recordings between the mid-’80s and mid-’00s , before the two formative members John Balance and Peter Christopherson died.

The latter was still alive when Coil superfan Stéphane Gregoire of French label Ici d’Ailleurs released a tribute entitled THE DARK AGE OF LOVE as This Immortal Coil, featuring Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Yael Naim or Yann Tiersen. This Immortal Coil was enthusiastically received by the strict Coil fan community, and a second effort was inevitable. For this Gregoire has changed the staff. Now the Brit Matt Eliott (whose voice is similar to that of John Balance), US singer/songwriter Shannon Wright or actor Márton Czokás, who played the husband of the elf Galadriel in “Lord of the Rings”, are singing.
Coil are in good hands in such sinister fantasy worlds: if music is escape from the world, then you descend to these sounds into the twilight, where every lust and abyss is named, in all gentleness, all brutality. Coil also understood abnormal noise, THE WORLD ENDED LONG AGO, on the other hand, dedicates itself to ballads – and finds light in the darkness of the human soul. Outstanding.
