It seems that nothing will happen at the controversial puppy trader in Eersel for the time being. After a court ruling, the breeder’s dogs should be gone on Thursday. Breeder Jan Paridaans is not impressed by the 2500 euro fine per week hanging over his head. “They just do. I will not take the dogs away for that fine.”
Paridaans reacts soberly to not meeting the deadline: “It just didn’t work out.” He does not intend to surrender without legal battle and says he will bring the case before the Council of State, the highest judicial body in the Netherlands. “They throw everything on our roof. I won’t let myself be broken. They will hear from us.”
The breeder says he still has 350 to 400 dogs. After a court ruling, he had six weeks to stop. The court allows the municipality to collect 2500 euros for each week that the dogs are still there. This up to a maximum amount of 25,000 euros.
Until the case is before the Council of State, Paridaans does not want to pay any fines. The municipality of Eersel says it knows the position of the breeder and thinks it should take this situation into account when collecting the fines.
Little space and bad water
Dog breeder Kwispel Enzo has been under fire for a long time. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has already shown up ten times. Various violations came to light, such as poor drinking water quality and too little floor space in the pens. The animals also rarely went outside.
A week ago, the NVWA confiscated 30 dogs that needed acute care. The NVWA also said last week to ‘continue the enforcement process’.
Paridaans denies that he would treat the animals badly. “We’re being screwed, if I may say it the ‘boers’ way. We are available for the dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” He says he will continue to take care of the dogs. “I have to, I have no choice.”
New lawsuits
A lawsuit is scheduled for January 2. Animal welfare organization House of Animals wants to force the NVWA to remove all dogs through the courts. A hearing will be held at the Council of State on 19 January.
