Ex-REM singer Michael Stipe is working on his first solo album – and says next year will finally be the day. He released his debut single “Your Capricious Soul” in 2019, followed in early 2022 by the second, “Future if Future”.

“I work with a number of different musicians and each of these songs will be very different,” he said in an interview about the album. He also promised that each title should be presented “visually”, but does not specify in what form. Stipe expects the album to be ready in 2023. He is also planning a new book, an art exhibition and a project with “many dancers”.

Stipe founded REM in 1980 with fellow students Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry. After the band broke up in 2011, he couldn’t imagine making music again. “It took me five years to come up with the idea again.” In 2018 he returned to music and participated in the album “Sir” by electroclash duo Fischerspooner.
