The skiers who were swallowed up by an avalanche near Lech in Austria on Christmas Day also included a few Flemish people. Karolien Fastenaekels from Halse Ghent was dragged along with her boyfriend, her father and her brother-in-law. “We were very lucky,” she says on the phone on her way home. She talks about the moment when she realized something was wrong, what went through her head when everything around her turned white and how afterwards she dug out a badly injured man.
