Ireen Wüst thinks about Paulien van Deutekom after gold: ‘Maybe she’s having a party up there’ | Olympics

“I feel like I’m in a dream,” continued Wüst. “It’s a fantastic film and it’s slowly descending into what I’ve actually done: and that’s quite unique. Gold for the fifth Games in a row and my sixth in total. As a 19-year-old I already shouted ‘This is unbelievable’ and as a 35-year-old I shout it again.”

“I feel good all the time and when you put on a race like that again at a time like that. This was really a top race at the right time. It was really exciting until the last ride. Miho Takagi was under my time, on my time, but if it eventually works out again… That’s not normal,” said Wüst.

After reflecting on her race, tears came to the surface when her teammate Paulien van Deutekom, who died in 2019, was mentioned. “I miss her every day and especially at moments like this. Normally we would be on the phone screaming. That is not possible then. But maybe she’s having a party up there right now.”

De Jong

For Antoinette de Jong there was bronze in the 1500 meters. “I am very happy and I am here with a relieved feeling”, although De Jong acknowledged that it did not go perfectly. “I notice that I can’t get rid of the energy I want to put into it, so that feels frustrating. The three kilometers didn’t go the way I wanted either, I had the feeling that I didn’t make a hit, but then you have to pick yourself up. And now I’m here with not a perfect race, which is nice. Then I can be happy with bronze.”
