Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy want to jointly develop a new fighter jet by 2035. This has been announced by the three countries.
The project has been dubbed ‘Global Combat Air Programme’. The latest generation fighter jets should offer new possibilities thanks to advanced sensors and weapons. Other countries can still join, it says.
Production is expected to start in 2030 or 2031, according to Japan’s Defense Ministry, with the goal of having a prototype by 2035.
The Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the British BAE Systems and the Italian Leonardo play a central role in the plan, according to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei.
