At Leverkusen, defenders Mitchel Bakker and Jeremie Frimpong started in the base. Donyell Malen played for Dortmund. The first two goals were own goals. First Manuel Akanji worked the ball into his own goal on behalf of Dortmund, then Frimpong headed a free kick past his own keeper. Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich Leverkusen took the lead again via a counterattack and a free kick.
After the break, Jonathan Tah scored with a volley from close range and Moussa Diaby tapped in the fifth on a pass from Frimpong. Steffen Tigges determined the final score in injury time.
