French top scorer of the World Cup
Kylian Mbappé is writing a little piece of football history game by game. The French striker, already world champion in 2018 at the age of 19 as a regular player and best young player of the tournament, has so far been the star of the World Cup in Qatar. After his fifth tournament goal in the round of 16 against Poland, the homage to the second most valuable professional in the world behind Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, who is “already a World Cup legend” for the “RMC” broadcaster, has been overwhelming.

His national coach Didier Deschamps replied on Sunday when asked whether he is currently the best player in the world: “Obviously he is.” In addition, he could “break any record”. The following impressive figures support this expertise.
Mbappé: The Frenchman’s statistics at a glance
1 – Mbappé is the first player to have scored nine World Cup goals at the age of 23. (TM stats: To the all-time top scorers list of the World Cup)
5 – No Frenchman has scored five goals before Mbappé at a World Cup other than Just Fontaine, who scored a legendary 13 goals at the 1958 tournament. (With Rahn and Pelé: The list of top scorers at the 1958 World Cup)
7 – No World Cup number, but still impressive: Mbappé also leads the Champions League goalscoring chart with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah with seven goals in six games. (To overview)
9 – Mbappé has become only the ninth player to score at least four goals in two consecutive World Cups, following his four goals in Russia in 2018. The eight prominent predecessors: Gerd Müller, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Müller (all Germany), Vavá (Brazil), Gary Lineker (England), Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina), Christian Vieri (Italy), Ronaldo (Brazil).
9 – With a total of nine goals at World Cups, Mbappé is the second most successful Frenchman. After Fontaine. But in front of icons like Thierry Henry (6), Zinédine Zidane or Michel Platini (both 5). (Giroud on top: These are France’s top scorers)
12 – With 12 goals, Mbappé also leads the French Ligue 1 scorer list ahead of his Parisian team-mate Neymar (11). With 147 goals, he is second only to Jean-Pierre Papin (156) in the league’s all-time top scorers list and could pass this season.
16 – Mbappé has scored 16 goals in his last 14 international matches. He also prepared seven more. That means he was involved in an average of 1.65 hits.
