“A lot of pent-up anger” led to an Oscar slap in the face

It’s been a few months since a slap completely eclipsed an entire Oscars. Will Smith wiped Chris Rock in the face after a botched joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith on stage. Back in his seat, he aggressively asked the comedian repeatedly not to mention his wife’s name. The situation only got hotter when, just minutes later, Smith was awarded a Best Actor Oscar. However, the Academy responded to the shameful incident and banned the actor from the next ten awards.

After Chris Rock, who had been hit several times in every respect, preferred to remain silent about the incident (for the time being), Will Smith tried to pull himself out of the affair with apologies. Now, with an appearance on the “Daily Show” with Trevor Noah, there was another attempt to somehow put the incident in the right light.

“I had some work to do that night,” Smith said without going into detail. “Of course, that doesn’t justify my behavior at all.” He added that there were “a lot of nuances and complications,” but also stated clearly, “I just blew the fuse.”

When asked what he learned from his mistakes, the 54-year-old replied: “I would say that few people know what you go through. (…) I understand how shocking that was for people. . . I was out of my mind. That was an anger that had been brewing inside me for a very long time. That was a horrible night for me, as anyone can imagine.”

Recently, Will Smith had emphasized in an interview that he could understand if viewers just didn’t want to see him on the screen or anywhere else at the moment. He was referring to the Apple+ film “Emancipation”, in which he plays and for whose large team he wishes that his action at the Oscars will not have any negative economic consequences for the film.
