Juventus board resigned around President Agnelli – club in financial difficulties

Club in financial trouble

The entire board of the Italian record champions Juventus Turin, including President Andrea Agnelli, has surprisingly resigned. The Juve bosses reacted to the club’s financial difficulties, including investigations by the public prosecutor’s office into possible accounting fraud. The northern Italians announced this after an extraordinary board meeting.

Ex-professional and vice-president Pavel Nedved also resigned. Maurizio Scanavino was temporarily appointed as General Manager. “We are in a tricky situation for the club,” Agnelli wrote in an email to employees, quoted by the Ansa news agency. At the next general meeting, which was convened for January 18, 2023, the new board of the association will be determined.

Agnelli had led the club since 2010 and was responsible for one of the most successful eras at Juventus. During that period, Turin won nine consecutive championships, four national cups and two Champions League finals. Players came under his aegis for a total of around 1.7 billion euros, including record signings Cristiano Ronaldo (for 117.00 million euros), Dušan Vlahović (for 81.60 million euros) and Gonzalo Higuaín (for 90 million euros). In return, footballers were sold for almost 1.2 billion euros (to all transfers from Juventus Turin). The club also moved to a new stadium under Andrea Agnelli, whose family has run Juventus for almost a century.

Most recently, the “Old Lady” got into violent turbulence. In September, the traditional club reported a record loss of 254.4 million euros for the previous season. The Italian stock exchange supervisory authority then intervened, and the public prosecutor’s office is also investigating the club for accounting fraud in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The amounts involved are said to be EUR 115 million, which the club noted in the books from fictitious evaluations of its players have.
