Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame. The former national player and longtime CEO of FC Bayern is the first German to receive this honor from the Italian association FIGC. The Hall of Fame has existed since 2011. Before the 66-year-old Rummenigge, stars such as Michel Platini and Diego Maradona had already been honored in the “Foreign Players” category.

The 1980 European champion and two-time runner-up (1982, 1986) played three seasons at Inter Milan from 1984 to 1987. In addition to Rummenigge, 2006 world champions Alessandro Nesta (Italian player) and Antonio Conte (coach) will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. The Dane Simon Kjaer receives a special prize for his actions in the dramatic collapse of national team colleague Christian Eriksen at the European Championships in the summer.
“It is with great pleasure that I thank the Italian federation for this award, which means a lot to me. I like to think back to my time at Inter Milan, which had a strong influence on me, as a footballer, but also as a person,” said Rummenigge on Friday about the award. “My family and I felt very comfortable there and are always connected to the club and the people involved. I always carry a piece of Italy in my heart.”
