Hardly any smartphone has as many hidden functions as the iPhone. High time to get to know the most important ones.
On TECHBOOK you will already find a huge selection of tricks for using the iPhone – including video instructions. But Apple itself shows iPhone users a video with ten practical tips that make handling even easier.
1. Delete entries in the calculator app
There are no buttons to delete numbers or characters in the calculator app. However, there is a trick: a simple one Swipe left or right above the number field takes on exactly this function.
Another handy trick: If you turn the iPhone 90 degrees, the keypad slides to the right and it appears scientific calculator with numerous additional functions.
2. Pin content in iMessage
iMessage has a handy feature for pinning content that has been sent to you. This makes it easier to find links and images, for example. To do this, you need to hold down the relevant message and click in the context menu pinning tap. Pinned messages have priority in the search function and appear in the chat details. Also, certain apps that support Shared with You will display the Pins.
With iOS 14, the iPhone got widgets for the first time that you can place anywhere on the home screen. The special thing about the small information boxes is that they can be combined with one another. In this way, stacks can be created in which several widgets lie on top of each other. Press and hold an empty space on the home screen to open the editing mode to activate. Then drag a widget over another widget of the same size to create a stack to create – this is possible with up to ten widgets. The iPhone automatically learns your usage habits and changes the displayed widget over the course of the day to what you currently need. Alternatively, you can just scroll through the stack by swiping the widgets.

4. Select and copy multiple photos at once
Press and hold a photo until iPhone vibrates briefly, then drag the image sideways slightly (continue to hold down). Now tap other photos with another finger to enter bunch to create (still hold down). Switch to the app you want to copy the images to while still holding the bundle. Now take your finger off the screen to paste the images to the destination.
5. Save time with text replacement
You can save time when typing by saving frequently used phrases and words as shortcuts using text replacement. To do this, go to the settings of the iPhone and select there Generalthen Keyboard and find the point there text replacement. Save the word or phrase you want to replace in Text. At the point shortcut you have to enter an abbreviation, which then automatically uses the previously saved phrases as you type.
Another tip: you can add terms that are missing from the previous dictionary to the list in the text replacement. To do this, tap on the top right plus and bears there under text the new word. The point shortcut can be ignored.
6. Launch camera from lock screen
The most obvious way to launch the camera on a locked iPhone is to press and hold the round camera icon in the bottom right. But it’s even faster. Just swipe left from the right edge of the screen and the camera app will open.
7. Scan documents

iPhone automatically recognizes the outline of the paper and crops the image accordingly. The image is automatically straightened and the contrast and brightness adjusted to make it easy to read. iOS even recognizes the text on the image, so you can search for specific words in it or copy the content. You can then scan additional documents or complete the process. The notes app recognizes the recordings created in this way as scanned documents. If you save them on the iPhone, iOS automatically converts them into PDF files.
8. Use live text in the camera app
With iOS 15, Apple’s iPhone has a very handy feature called live text to get. With it, the iPhone automatically recognizes text in photos, which you can then select, copy, look up and translate. This works in the camera viewfinder, but also with photos that have already been taken. If there is text in the photo, a small, round text icon will automatically appear. This can be used to call up Live Text, which displays the recognized text directly in a small box. There you can copy the text and simply paste it into another app.
9. Jump to the first picture in the Photos app
Got so many pictures in the Photos app that it’s taking too long to scroll to the top by hand? With a click on the top edge of screen (just below the notch) takes you straight to the first image in the gallery. This works the same way in albums in the Photos app, as well as in search results. To go back to the most recent photo, just tap the appropriate tab in the bottom bar of the Photos app you’re in — about media library or albums.
10. Go to Spotlight Search
Many of you already know that you can access the search function in the iPhone by swiping down on the home screen. In iOS 15, the Spotlight search but even access from the lock screen. It is also sufficient to swipe down and the search field appears at the top of the screen. If you click on a search result, the iPhone will automatically unlock itself using Face ID.
