Claudia Pechstein is taking part in the Winter Games for the eighth time and is the most successful German participant at the Games with five gold medals and two silver and two bronze medals.
The 49-year-old long-distance specialist competes over 3,000 meters (9:30 a.m.). “That’s pure emotion, that’s pure motivation. The legs may not be fresh, but the head is fresh.”
The Berliner holds the Olympic record over this distance (3:57.70 minutes), set 20 years ago on the fast ice in Salt Lake City.
Biathlon: Mixed Relay
There will be extreme biathlon at Zhangjiakou for the biathletes in double-digit minus temperatures. There, the German quartet with Denise Herrmann, Vanessa Voigt, Benedikt Doll and Philipp Nawrath in the mixed relay (10 a.m.) grabs the first precious metal.
