Fentz in the short program among his possibilities
The German figure skating champion Paul Fentz opened the Olympic team competition in Beijing in front of just 200 handpicked spectators. The 29-year-old Berliner showed Fentz a moderate performance. For the Razorlight song “Wire To Wire” he left out the planned combination of quadruple and triple toe loops, and the triple axel didn’t work as desired either. The EM-16 remained with 68.64 points. well below his potential and finished ninth.
“We miss you” – German team thinks of Seegert
The German team also created an emotional moment, but off the ice. After Fentz’ short program, the whole team gathered in front of the TV camera, individual runner Nicole Schott held up a poster with photos of Nolan Seegert, who was in corona quarantine, and his partner Minerva Hase and the inscription “We miss you”. “The mood is still good. It’s no good if we all pull ourselves down. We’re a strong team,” said Fentz and revealed: “The girls made the poster, they’re a little more creative than the boys.”
The German pair skating champion Seegert from Berlin cannot take part in the team competition alongside his partner after his positive corona test. Qualifying for the freestyle decision on Monday (February 7th, 2022) is therefore almost impossible. The same applies to Ukraine, where individual runner Ivan Schmuratkow was infected with the corona virus
However, Seegert reiterated his hope of playing in pair skating. “I wish our team all the best for the upcoming team competition,” wrote the 29-year-old Berliner on social networks. He will do everything to be able to compete in the pair skating competition with his sporting partner Minerva Hase as planned on February 18th and 19th.
Seegert in the isolation hotel
Seegert was the first German athlete to test positive for the corona virus in Beijing and is in an isolation hotel. After two negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart, those affected can leave before the end of ten days. After the deadline, only a negative PCR test is required. If Seegert meets these requirements, he could compete in pair skating.
