Manuel Neuer had cancer and had to undergo three surgeries. The FC Bayern goalkeeper has now gone public with his illness and, together with tennis ace Angelique Kerber, is investing in sunscreen to protect other people from the disease.
“In my case, it’s skin cancer on my face, which caused me to have three surgeries,” the keeper is quoted as saying in the “Bild”.
There were rumors of an illness last December after the 36-year-old was seen with a plaster on his face before the Champions League game against FC Barcelona.
Neuer founds the company together with tennis ace Kerber
There is a special reason why Manuel Neuer is going public with his story right now: together with tennis player Angelique Kerber, the goalkeeper is investing in sunscreen: “Since we are constantly training and playing outside and also like to spend our free time in nature, it is It is essential for us to start with modern sun protection filters and with a sun protection factor of 50+.”
The project is also an affair of the heart for Kerber. The three-time Grand Slam winner suffers from sun-related hyperpigmentation and has therefore had to take preventive measures for years.
“As top athletes, we know exactly what is important in daily skin care. We do many hours of sport every week – so we take a shower several times a day. We literally wear our own history on our skin,” says the 34- year olds.
Meanwhile, skin cancer had no effect on Manuel Neuer’s sporting career. The use at the football World Cup in Qatar is therefore not in danger. However, the international goalkeeper is still suffering from a shoulder injury that has kept him out of action in recent weeks.
Neuer played his last game so far on October 8 against BVB. Since then he has been represented by Sven Ulreich.
