Shelley Duvall was already a big light on sophisticated Hollywood cinema when she cast Stanley Kubrick in his infamous Stephen King adaptation of The Shining and made her world famous. Duvall had ravishing performances in the Altman films Nashville, Three Women, and Woody Allen cast her brilliantly in The City Neurotic. But the role of the hysterical mother stuck with her – just like the painful shoot of the horror classic.
Even though the now 73-year-old pursued a few notable projects after “The Shining” (such as “Roxanne” with Steve Martin), she lost her aura over time and later kept her head above water, mainly with supporting roles. In 2002 he left the film business with “Manna From Heaven”.
Shelley Duvall and “The Forest Hills”: Another mother role
Now comes the backtrack: Shelley Duvall will star in writer-director Scott Goldberg’s indie horror thriller The Forest Hills, Deadline reports. It’s about a disturbed man who is tormented by nightmarish visions after suffering a severe skull injury while camping in the Catskill Mountains. Duvall will play the mother of the mentally and emotionally disturbed Rico, and appear primarily as an inner voice.
Director Goldberg is excited about the casting coup: “We’re big fans of ‘The Shining,’ and it’s honestly one of my favorite horror films of all time, along with John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ and George A. Romero’s ‘Day of the Dead’ ( …). Shelley helped make ‘The Shining’ an absolute masterpiece, giving it her all and performing in a way that truly conveyed the fear and dread of an isolated mother.
For years, Shelley Duvall had completely withdrawn from the public eye. A 2016 video interview with well-known television psychologist Dr. Phil (Phil McGraw) made her appear in a deplorable state, even professing to be severely mentally disturbed. Then, last year, she gave another interview about the making process of “The Shining” and burst into tears at the sight of a filmed scene of the film.
