Third division football club VfL Osnabrück has achieved the hoped-for liberation in the basement duel with Halleschen FC. After three bankruptcies in a row, the Lower Saxony won 3: 2 (1: 2) on Monday evening.
The “Purple-Whites” earned the success with a significant increase in performance in the second period. At half-time, the home side were still 1:2 behind after a very mixed performance and goals from Tom Zimmerschied (4th) and Niklas Kreuzer (24th, penalty kick) as well as the interim equalization by Jannes Wulff (22nd).
After the change of sides, an own goal by Sören Reddemann (59th) and Erik Engelhardt (66th) ensured the enormously important victory, which saw Osnabrück improve to 14th place.
VfL conceded an early goal
The suspended VfL coach Tobias Schweinsteiger – who saw the red card in the game at Elversberg on the previous day – had barely sat down in the stands at the stadium on Bremer Brücke when his team was already 1-0 down. After a cross from Nico Hug, chaos reigned in Osnabrück’s defence, the ball fell at Zimmerschied’s feet, who defeated keeper Daniel Adamczyk with a shot from 16 meters out.
From then on, the home side left an unsettled impression. In terms of football, almost everything remained piecemeal with them. In terms of commitment, however, the Lower Saxony could not be blamed.
Wulff scores in the debut of the starting XI
Wulff in particular put a lot of passion into the scales when he made his debut for the “Lila-Weißen” and rewarded himself for a strong performance with a well-placed low shot to make it 1-1. The home side’s celebrations were short-lived. Just 60 seconds later, Omar Traoré made a wooden move against Hug in his own penalty area, causing the player from Halle to fall and causing a penalty.
Kreuzer certainly turned into another guest lead, which also lasted after 45 minutes.
Osnabrück as if replaced after the break

The 25-year-old was an invigorating element for the “Purple-Whites” game, which was hardly recognizable compared to the first half. VfL now acted with much more force and speed and pushed HFC into their own half.
And now the hosts also had the famous luck of the smart when Halle’s Reddemann maneuvered a cross from Engelhardt into his own net. Now the “bridge” trembled, on which it had been very quiet in the first half because the VfL fans had remained silent in protest against Monday’s games.
Engelhardt’s goal turns the game
The industrious Engelhardt finally brought the Osnabrück supporters into ecstasy. After HFC keeper Daniel Mesenhöler cleared a cross too centrally, the 24-year-old was on the spot and put Lower Saxony in the lead for the first time that evening.
VfL was then closer to the 4:2 than the guests to the equalizer, so that his victory was deserved at the end of an eventful 90 minutes.
